Therapy – A brief history.

Therapy is the brainchild of well-known DJ and entertainment businessman, Stuart Hillary. As innovator and passionate music creator, combined with a quality driven mindset, he brought about the birth of Therapy Nightclub during August of 1997, a turning point for Jo'burg club land. It was an initiative that was brought about because of (what was viewed as) a lack of progressive dance environments.

Therapy opened as a nightclub that catered for out – of – the – closet gay people and their friends. Elaborate décor and top calibre entertainment made every party memorable. Therapy has put gay club land back in its natural position as trendsetters musically for a broader club scene (Therapy always played "funky house", long before the explosion in funky beats).

Therapy's achievements were recognized by Gallo record company, with the release of the cd "Therapy – Phunky as Phuck". Therapy hosted 2 nights at award winning London venue, The End, which were well attended by London's large gay South African community. Therapy won "Best Gay Nightclub" in the "Options" – Best of Johannesburg survey, for three consecutive years. A regular flow of international DJ talent, combined with local creativity, put Therapy on a par with international nightspots. By 2000, Therapy was rated the 6th best gay nightclub in the world and remained in that position until its climatic closing in March 2003.

Therapy has returned as a full flexed night club on March 29th 2008, to a club scene starved of international standard party events. An exciting new partnership between the legendary Carfax and Therapy means Therapy has returned, every Saturday night, exactly 5 years to the day after closing in Braamfontein. It is very clear that the brand "Therapy" not only has a solid support from the older party crowd but also the new generation.

In addition to the incomparable Stuart Hillary, the new Therapy partners include Fulvio De Stefanis (Legends, Bitch, Mother) and Sasha, Chris and Malcolm from Carfax, one of Joburg's leading club venues. Personal touches are taken care of by the original Therapy Host and Manager, Eugene Fisher. Carfax, the venue, has grown into a symbol of hope for inner city dance culture. Newly redesigned to compliment modern social living, it was instrumental in the success of previous "Special Therapy" parties.
